CYL SERVICE ADVENTURE

**This service adventure takes place in Calhan, CO, 1.5 hours from Denver.**

Family-friendly: For high school students and their families, including younger siblings.

Saving the Wild American Burro is a nonprofit serving as the voice and advocating for the wild Burro by providing care, proper relationship building, and educational resources that help promote a training environment for the local burro community as well.

What to Expect: This CYL Service Adventure is an opportunity to work with burros (really cute donkeys) and support a 190-acre ranch and explore different natural aspects of the wildland that is Colorado.

Typical Schedule of the day:

10-2PM: Service at Saving the Wild American Burro

Our day will start with a service learning opportunity working with Saving the Wild American Burro. Saving the Wild American Burro is a nonprofit serving as the voice and advocating for the wild Burro by providing care, proper relationship building, and educational resources that help promote a training environment for the local burro community as well.

During this service adventure participants will be working on projects on the 190 acre ranch that might include:

  • Caring for the obstacle course by clearing a 3-4 acre pasture of weeds and barriers
  • Learn how to lead and care for the burros
  • Option to learn how to get acquainted with saddle training
  • Learn how to put lead ropes on burros and lead them through on a short obstacle course for burro mental development training

OPTIONAL 2-4PM: Opportunity to Hike around the Interpretive Paint Mines Park

After serving with the Saving the Wild American Burro, we will be heading just 2 miles down the road and to explore and hike around the Interpretive Paint Mines Park.

The park features fantastic geological formations including spires and hoodoos that form through erosive action that creates incised gullies and exposed layers of selenite clay and jasper that are shown in brightly colored bands and stunning colorful views. While hiking, we will get a closer and more in depth look into the past for signs of human interaction as well as learning about the geologic design of this stunning natural park.

The park includes a restroom facility, four miles of trails, interpretive signage, and many natural wonders.

What to bring:

PREPARE FOR MUD (due to recent rains). Bring your own lunch, water, and wear proper clothing and closed-toed shoes for light hiking and outdoor ranch work. CYL will have extra masks, hand sanitizer, snacks, and extra water on hand.

**All participants under 18 will be required to fill out a CYL waiver with parental signature**
