What is UpRISE?
UpRISE is a youth-led community movement that aims to engage and empower young people to understand root causes of tobacco use in youth and fight back against the tobacco industry. Young people are encouraged, through partnerships with adult community advocates, to push for social or policy change in their communities that will benefit all youth in their communities. Young people learn about intersectionality, and how issues such as the environment, mental health, and racism directly connect to tobacco control.

Young people are leading discussions to identify the root causes of youth tobacco use where they live, and organizing to bring awareness and action steps to the changemakers in their communities.

What is the Youth Action Board (YAB)?
UpRISE’s Youth Action Board consists of a small group of youth leaders (ages 12-24) from across Colorado who meet regularly to discuss social justice topics, build leadership skills, and advise on goals and direction of the movement as a whole. The Youth Action Board leads UpRISE. The YAB will meet every week by Zoom or phone and twice a year in person (or virtually) to engage in critical conversations, work to connect all UpRISE youth to their fellow leaders, and have fun!

The YAB is Facilitated by two UpRISE team members and YAB members are encouraged to step up and lead the group with us! Leaders will be selected to participate for a one-year term, but will be invited to continue on the board for as long as they wish. This is a paid opportunity.

Each board member will be compensated $15 per hour for their participation in meetings and attendance at events. Each board member can receive UP TO $750 each year. For all in-person meetings there will be travel reimbursement and paid overnight accommodations.

What are the goals of the UpRISE Youth Action Board (YAB)?
1. Increase leadership skills (public speaking, problem solving, decision-making, teamwork)
2. Examine root causes of tobacco/substance use, and explore strategies for social change
3. Support each other in our individual and collective growth as change makers
4. Participate in policy advocacy around tobacco control issues
5. Critically examine how social justice issues overlap and intersect with each other

Am I qualified? We are looking for people who:
● Are between the ages 12-24
● Have experience or interest in tobacco control or community work in some way
● Interested in social justice and change making
● Have access to a phone or computer
● Hold diverse identities and life experiences

What is the time commitment and other expectations?
