Job Summary
Urban Rangers employment program is a partnership between Environmental Learning for Kids and Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Urban Rangers will gain valuable experience in teaching outdoor curriculum, conduct fishing clinics, activating the Montbello Open Space Park, leading community outreach programs, assist with prep of educational programs, participate in professional development and will participate fully in ELK’s summer programming. Urban Rangers will be introduced to careers within the STEM field and have the opportunity to network and gain professional development experience. This is a 30-39 hour a week position, Tuesday-Saturday work week, June 1st through mid-August.
 
Major Duties and Responsibilities
 
Programs –100% of employee’s time (100% Programs)
 
  • Deliver educational programs around natural resources and outdoor-based curriculum, including aquatic ecology and fishing clinics, Colorado wildlife education programs, and other community and outreach programs.
  • Conduct fishing clinics
  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic fish biology and fishing techniques (training provided)
  • Assemble fishing rods 
  • Clean up fishing equipment and working site
  • Assist with ELK year-round programs happening both on-site at the Montbello Open Space Park and off-site throughout Colorado.
  • Leading programs at the Montbello Open Space Park 
  • Be a leader for community outreach events
  • Attend two overnight trips 
  • Participate in stewardship work including; trail maintenance, forest mitigation, installation of pollinator garden, etc. 
  • Be professional and accountable 
  • Contribute to a positive, productive workplace through open communication, problem solving, sense of humor, adventurous spirit and dedication to achieving ELK’s goals and mission.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
 
Required Qualifications
Education: Must be currently enrolled in High School or College 
 
Experience: Must have interest in working outdoors and with youth 
 
CBI/FBI Background check required. Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift 30 lbs. occasionally. 
 
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Must be available to work full season: June- mid August 
  • Ability to speak clearly and comfortably to large groups of children and adults
  • Enjoy interacting and presenting to kids who are participating in fishing /educational programs 
  • Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and written and oral communication skills
  • Team Player who is open minded and flexible
  • Interest in the outdoors- no previous experience required 
  • Interest in working with youth 
  • Responsible for transportation to and from the Montbello Open Space Park
  • Spanish speaking is a plus
  • Willingness to be outdoors for extended periods of time
