WANT TO LEAN INTO SOME FUN CYL ACTIONS COMING UP AND WANT TO GET TO KNOW OTHER CYLERS?
Join us for our upcoming start-of-year CYL Kickoff Event! It is going to be a fun outdoor event where you can meet our staff and brand new Youth Advisory Board and get to know each other while participating in fun activities and games, making our own trail mix bar, and having an opportunity to explore ways to get involved in CYL!
We will also be leading a mini Intro to CYL session that night for parents or new students to learn about us more (see more below). It’s a great opportunity for you to bring friends to learn about CYL and hang out and get to know us!
All ages are invited.
For Parents: Parents will be able to join in on the fun and learn more about Colorado Young Leaders, meet the staff, and learn more about everything our program can offer youth.
For Youth: High school students and young ones will be able to play games and do fun activities to get to know CYL and join in playing some fun games to explore fun ways to step outside your comfort zone.
So why is it also called a 14er 101 event?
Are you interested in doing some hiking in Colorado (or want to try to hike a 14er with us later this month) but nervous or unsure how to get started with what you might need? We will have a 14er 101 info session at the event and get a head start on prepping for your future outdoor adventures!
14ER 101 ACTIVITIES WILL INCLUDE:
- GEAR: how to pack a pack, what you wear and bring
- FIRST AID: basic first aid information around self-care
- PREPARATION: staying safe and warm, how to set goals for yourself, basic navigation trail considerations
- FOOD: taste testing some camp food faves and making your own GORP (trail mix) bar
Our goal is for you to leave better equipped to handle the great outdoors!
Colorado is studded with more than 50 mountain peaks exceeding 14,000 feet — known as "14ers" or “fourteeners” — the most of any state and many of which are the highest in the Rockies.
Each year, CYL hikes a 14er as a metaphor to kickoff our school year for the challenge our leaders face throughout their leadership and service journey. 14ers are both a mental and physical challenge. A day of hiking requires you to check in with yourself and with others; it's a place for you to step out of your comfort zone to try something new and to challenge yourself beyond what you thought you could do. You also realize the support you have around you, and gives you practice asking for help. Just like in life, 14ers ask you to rely on others and to work together to achieve an established goal.
This year, our annual hiking and camping trip will be taking place on August 26th-27th, 2023.
This intro session is a great opportunity for those of you who are interested in joining us on our annual 14er Hike happening on August 27th but are a little nervous to sign up. We want you to know that we work hard to accommodate all levels of experience on our hiking and camping excursions!
