The Preserve America Youth Summit: Next Generation Stewards: Connecting Cultures and Saving Places in SW Colorado will be held in the Southwest Colorado area July 29-August 1, 2024, highlighting Mesa Verde National Park and World Heritage Site, Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, Crow Canyon Archaeological Center, and other historic places in region.
The theme will focus on “Connecting Cultures and Saving Places” to provide opportunities to explore the connection to many cultures in the region and saving our sacred lands with the backdrop of public lands and historic places.
The Summit is sponsored by Colorado Preservation, Inc., History Colorado and History Colorado State Historical Fund and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Thanks to the sponsors-there are no costs! Lodging, meals, program costs and transportation during the Summit are provided to all selected participants.
The program offers “behind-the-scenes” experiences at historic places and includes activities not generally available for field trips or family visits. Youth gain invaluable experience being treated as “consultants” in visits to historic places; and given the opportunity to provide ideas and produce recommendations on critical current issues. Youth are asked to share their ideas and opinions fostering leadership development.
Students, chaperones, and teachers have described the Summit as some of the most memorable experiences of their lives! At the Summits, students gain valuable leadership, communication, and organizational skills. It’s also fun!
As the Youth Summit participants are treated like consultants, the program is highly immersive, and participation is required at all events between noon on Monday through the conclusion of the Summit at noon on Thursday.
Participants will lodge with chaperones and teachers for three nights: Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights with extensive programming during the day and conclude with presentations at a Public Forum/Town Hall on Thursday, August 1st.
All students receive a Certificate of Participation and 32 hours of community service and the opportunity to attend other Summits, including national Summits! Many
Youth Summit program alumni have used the Youth Summit experience in job and college applications and also in reference to receiving scholarships and other ways to be considered for advancement.
Students, teachers and service leaders are selected through competitive application available online at www.preservationyouthsummit.org.
